Introduction

Panel Upscaler enhances the resolution of every individual image within a story panel, upscaling each one in a single generation. It's the natural next step after working in Story Panels — once you have a panel sequence you want to develop further or export, Panel Upscaler brings each image up to a higher quality output without any additional configuration. It's useful for storyboard artists, comic creators, and filmmakers who need production-ready resolution from their panel work.

Prerequisites

Before using Panel Upscaler, you'll need:

  • A story panel image — an image containing panels, such as output from the Story Panels app

This app requires credits to run and does not support infinite generations in Explore Mode.

Step 1 — Accessing Panel Upscaler

Panel Upscaler lives in the Apps section of Runway. You can get there two ways:

  1. Navigate to Apps in the left sidebar, then browse to find Panel Upscaler
  2. Use the search bar at the top of the Apps panel and type Panel Upscaler

Select the app to open it.

Step 2 — Adding the inputs

Panel Upscaler has one input.

Story Panel Upload your story panel image using the Select button. No prompt or additional configuration is needed — Panel Upscaler automatically identifies and upscales each individual image within the panel.

Step 3 — Generating with Panel Upscaler

Before generating, confirm:

  • Your story panel image has been uploaded
  • The input is required — the Generate button will not be active until an image is provided

Once your image is in place, select Generate. Panel Upscaler uses up to 60 credits per generation and outputs 3 upscaled images.

Next steps

You've used Panel Upscaler to bring your story panel images up to a higher resolution output. From here, you might explore:

  • Vary Image — Bring your upscaled panels into Vary Image to generate subtle variations and refine details while preserving the overall composition.
  • Cinematic Brainstorm — Use Cinematic Brainstorm to generate a 3×3 grid of scenes that expand a single upscaled image into a cohesive visual narrative for your entire story.
