The default generation name setting automatically names generations using variables like tool, prompt and date. Admins and billing admins can set a naming convention across an Enterprise organization or customize it per workspace.

Setting a default generation name

Admins and billing admins can manage naming templates for every workspace from the Organization space.

Default Generation Name section in Runway Organization settings, with a naming template field, a Clear button and a list of workspaces showing which follow the organization default and which use their own template
  1. Select your workspace name in the top left corner of your Dashboard, then select Organization settings
  2. Navigate to the Settings tab
  3. Select the template field under Default Generation Name
  4. Select any Variables and type any static text to include
  5. Review the Preview, then select Confirm

To remove it, select Clear beneath the field, or select Reset to default within the template window to restore standard naming.

Customizing naming for individual workspaces

If your organization has multiple workspaces, you can set a separate naming template for each one. Below the template field, every workspace is listed with its current naming behavior:

  • Default — the workspace follows the organization-wide template
  • A custom template — the workspace uses its own generation naming instead of the organization default. Select the × to remove it and return the workspace to the default

Select a workspace from the list, then choose its variables and static text, and select Confirm.

Available variables

Variables fill in automatically for each generation. The following variables are available:

  • Prompt — the text prompt used in the generation
  • Seed — the generation's seed number
  • Date — the date the generation was created
  • Style — the style applied to the generation
  • User — the name of the member who created the generation
  • Workspace — the workspace the generation was created in
  • Tool — the tool or model used to generate

Variables can be combined with plain text to match your team's naming conventions.

FAQ

Which template applies if my organization and workspace both have one?

The workspace's own template takes priority. The organization-wide template applies to workspaces marked Default in the Organization settings.

Does Runway automatically rename existing generations when I change the template?

No. The template names new generations only. Existing assets keep their current names and can be renamed individually in the asset browser.

Can members change the file name of an individual generation?

Yes. The template sets each generation's initial name, and members can still rename any individual asset from the asset browser.
