Custom generation preferences let you tell Runway Agent how to generate media in your own words. Instead of choosing between quality, speed or cost, write natural language instructions that describe what you want — preferred models, resolutions, aspect ratios and more — and Agent applies them when planning and generating.
Setting Custom Preferences
- In an Agent session, select the generation settings chip in the message box
- Under Optimize generations, select Custom
- Type your instructions in the text box. Select @ Add or type @ to reference a specific model, resolution or aspect ratio
Custom preferences apply to your current session. To carry them into every new session going forward, select Set as default.
Writing Useful Preferences
Short, direct instructions work best. A few examples:
- Always prefer 1080p and 16:9
- Use GPT Image 2 for images
- For long videos, prefer Seedance 2.5
Agent weighs your preferences when picking models and settings, but will always choose a model capable of fulfilling your request. Treat preferences as guidance for Agent rather than strict rules.
FAQ
Can I make Agent always use a specific model?
Custom preferences let you tell Agent which model to reach for. Select Custom under Optimize generations, type @ to reference the model, and describe when Agent should use it. Select Set as default to apply this to all new sessions.
If your request needs a capability that model doesn't have, Agent may pick a different model that can complete the task.
Can I set a preference for a model my plan doesn't include?
You can reference any model in your preferences, but generating still follows your plan's model access. If a preferred model isn't included in your plan, Agent can't generate with it until you upgrade.
