The Runway plugin brings Runway into Adobe Premiere Pro. Generate images and video, restyle clips already in your sequence and place results directly on your timeline.
Setting Up the Plugin
You'll need:
Premiere Pro on macOS or Windows
A Runway account — the plugin is a free download; generating uses your paid plan's credits
An internet connection — generations run on Runway's servers.
- Quit Premiere Pro (and After Effects) completely
- Download the installer for your system from the Runway plugin page. One installer covers both Premiere Pro and After Effects: on macOS, open the
.pkg(Apple Silicon and Intel); on Windows, run the.exe - Open Premiere Pro and select Window → Extensions → Runway
- Select Sign in and your browser opens to log into Runway. You never type your password into the panel itself
- If you belong to more than one workspace, pick one from the switcher in the panel header. That workspace is billed for your generations, your choice persists and your results land in its feed on web too
To update, download the new installer when the panel shows a banner. Premiere Pro keeps its own session, so the After Effects panel signs in separately.
What Can I Do With the Plugin?
- Generate image — backgrounds, plates, overlays, title cards and scene elements from a prompt
- Generate video — scenes, B-roll, inserts and camera moves, with references, start frames and per-model settings for aspect ratio and duration
- Edit Studio — select a layer in your comp and the panel captures the clip automatically, with frame-accurate anchor frames pulled from your timeline and no manual exporting. Restyle the anchors or set up to five keyframes, and Aleph 2 re-renders the full clip at the same duration, with a before/after view to compare
- Video-to-video — change the look of a shot with reference-driven edits, including HDR conversion
- Remove background — clean, alpha-ready keys without a green screen, with subject prompts
- Upscale — boost clips and frames with real detail recovery
- Generations feed — browse and re-import past work, with live progress on in-flight generations; everything also appears in your workspace on web
- Import to comp — select Import on any finished generation and it lands in your project and active comp in one click. If no comp is open, it still imports to your project panel and the panel tells you
Video-to-video, remove background, upscale and HDR conversion work on a selected comp layer or any asset in your feed. Every tool uses credits from your plan, the same as on web: your balance and each generation's cost show in the panel before you generate.
Troubleshooting
The panel doesn't show up in Premiere Pro
- Quit Premiere Pro (and After Effects) completely, then run the installer again
- On Windows, run the installer as administrator
- On macOS, if the installer is blocked, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway
- Confirm your Premiere Pro version is supported, then check Window → Extensions for Runway
Import-and-place put my asset in the bin instead of the timeline
That's the fallback when no track has free space at the playhead, tracks are locked or no sequence is open. Unlock a track or move the playhead and import again, or drag the asset from your bin.
I'm signed in but see a workspace error
If you've lost access to your previously selected workspace, the panel clears the selection and asks you to pick another from the header switcher.
My generation failed
The plugin panel will explain most failure causes, like out of credits, invalid input or connection lost. If you see "Can't reach Runway," check your connection and try again.
FAQ
Can I cancel a generation?
Not currently. Once a generation is submitted, it runs to completion and uses its credits.
Does the plugin work in After Effects too?
Yes. The same installer sets up the panel in both apps. See Using Runway Plugins in Adobe After Effects for host-specific details.
Can I use the plugin on the Free plan?
You can sign in, but the panel will prompt you to upgrade to generate.
Which models can I use in the plugin?
The same lineup as your plan on web. All paid plans include the full lineup; on Enterprise, your admin's model settings apply in the plugin too.
What isn't supported in the plugin yet?
- Outpainting (Expand)
- Drag-and-drop from the feed — click-to-import is one click and places the asset at your playhead for you
Sessions may also occasionally expire and ask you to sign in again. We're working on these; watch the changelog for updates.
Can I use results commercially?
Yes. Plugin generations are covered by the same terms as web, including commercial use on paid plans. See Runway's Terms of Use.
