A custom voice is a clone of your own voice that you can use when generating speech from text, so any script you write can be spoken in your voice without you recording it. Custom voices are available on Pro plans and higher, and each one costs 50 credits to create.

Custom voice options in the Runway voice list

You create and manage custom voices from the Custom tab of the voice list in Tool mode, using a model that supports them.

  1. Select Tool in the left-hand sidebar
  2. At the top of the left panel, select Audio
  3. Open the model picker next to the Generate button at the bottom of the panel
  4. Select a model that supports custom voices, such as Eleven v3
  5. Below the script field, select the Custom tab in the voice list
  6. Choose how you want to create the voice, then follow the prompts for that option:
    • Clone a voice: record yourself in the app or upload a clip you already have
    • Generate Voice: describe the voice you want and let the model create one
  7. Once your sample is recorded, uploaded or described, select Generate Voice
  8. Name the voice. You can also add a description to help you tell your voices apart
  9. Select the checkbox to confirm you have the rights to clone this voice
  10. Select Add Voice. This is the step that uses 50 credits

Your new voice appears under the Custom tab, marked Private to you. Select it like any other voice, then generate as usual. See Generating speech from text for the full steps.

FAQ

What makes a good voice sample?

Aim for 1 to 2 minutes of speech with varied tone, recorded in a quiet space with as little background noise as possible. If you're recording in the app, the example script in the Generate Custom Voice window gives you enough to read, or you can talk naturally about anything. If you're uploading a clip, the same guidance applies: a clean recording of the voice with plenty of range will clone better than a short or noisy one.

Can I clone someone else's voice?

Yes, but only with their explicit permission. See Voice verification for what Runway does and doesn't permit when cloning a voice.

How do I rename, share or delete a custom voice?

Under the Custom tab in the voice list, hover over the voice's name to show the rename, share and delete options. Custom voices are marked Private to you until you share them.
