Building and running Workflows with Agent

Running a workflow built by Agent is currently available to users on a Standard plan or higher.

Agent can now build, edit, discover and run Runway Workflows directly from a chat session. Describe the process you want to automate and Agent assembles a reusable workflow you can open in the Workflows editor, share, or rerun later. You can also point Agent at an existing workflow and have it fill in the inputs and run it from chat.

If you're new or want to explore more in depth Workflows or Agent, see the articles Introduction to Workflows and Creating with Runway Agent.

What can Agent do with Workflows?

Agent works with Workflows in three ways, and new capabilities are added regularly.

  • Build — Describe a process in chat and Agent proposes a workflow, including nodes, connections, and settings, for you to review before it's created.
  • Run — Ask Agent to run a workflow you have access to. Agent reads the workflow's exposed inputs, maps text and assets from your chat to them, and asks for anything missing before generating.
  • Find and reuse — Ask Agent what workflows you have, what inputs a given workflow needs, or to adjust a workflow's settings and rerun it, all without leaving the chat.

Step 1 – Opening Agent

You can start from Workflows or from Agent, depending on where you are:

  • From the Agent page, click the Workflow, or describe the workflow you want in a new chat.
  • From the Workflows page, click Create with Agent.

Any of these opens a chat session scoped to building and running workflows.

Approval and credit behavior

Agent uses two separate approval points when working with workflows:

  • Creating a workflow: Agent confirms before saving a new workflow to your workspace. Building a workflow doesn't consume credits on its own.
  • Running a workflow: with Ask before generating media enabled, Agent shows the models, prompts, and estimated credit cost for the run and waits for your go-ahead before generating.

These follow the same generation-mode setting you use for any session, covered in Creating with Runway Agent. If your generation mode is set to Automatically generate, workflow runs start immediately and consume credits without a confirmation step, so consider Ask before generating media for workflows with several generation nodes.

Step 2 – Building a workflow

Describe the process you want Agent to automate. Be specific about the inputs you'll provide, the generations you want to run, and what the final output should look like.

  1. In the chat, enter a prompt such as Build a workflow that takes a product photo and a text description, then generates a 5-second video ad.
  2. Agent proposes a workflow structure and asks you to approve it before creating anything. Review the nodes it suggests.
  3. Ask Agent to adjust settings in plain language, for example Change the aspect ratio to 9:16 or Turn audio off.

Once agent begins building the workflow, you'll be able to view from the Workflows tab at the top of the screen.

Step 3 – Running a workflow from chat

Agent reads a workflow's exposed inputs, maps text and assets from your chat to those inputs, and asks for anything missing before it runs.

  1. Ask Agent to run a specific workflow, such as Run my "Product ad" workflow with this image.
  2. Attach any reference assets the workflow needs.
  3. Confirm to run the workflow; if required inputs are missing, Agent asks for them in chat. Provide the values or assets and continue.

Track the run's progress from the Workflow tab. When it finishes, results appear in the workflow's output.

Step 4 – Finding and reusing workflows

Agent can locate workflows you have access to and explain what they do before you run them.

  • Ask What workflows do I have? to see the workflows you own, plus any shared with your Workspace or with a Project you belong to.
  • Ask What inputs does [workflow name] need? to preview the required fields before providing assets.
  • Ask Agent to modify a workflow's aspect ratio, resolution, or audio setting, then rerun it.

Agent can run workflows shared with you, but it won't edit a workflow someone else owns. Ask Agent to make a copy instead. The copy is created in your workspace and can be edited freely.

FAQs

Agent said the run succeeded, but some outputs are missing

Individual node generations can fail even when the overall run completes. Open the workflow in the editor and inspect each node's output to identify which step didn't produce a result. Rerun the workflow or adjust the inputs on the failing node.

The nodes in my new workflow are overlapping

Freshly created workflows can occasionally have overlapping node layouts. Open the workflow in the editor and drag nodes apart to reorganize the canvas. See Introduction to Workflows for canvas basics.

Agent declined to run my workflow

If a workflow has unclear or missing inputs, Agent may decline to run it and link you to the editor instead. Open the workflow, confirm each exposed input has a clear name and description, save, then try again from chat.

My clips look inconsistent across the workflow's outputs

For multi-clip workflows that tell a single story, ask Agent to add a system prompt for visual consistency when building the workflow, for example Add a system prompt that keeps the style and characters consistent across all clips.

What's the difference between a Skill and a Workflow?

Skills are saved instructions you invoke with a slash command in the Agent composer to guide how Agent approaches a task within a chat. Workflows are node-based pipelines saved as standalone assets in your workspace that you can rerun, edit, and share. Agent can use both.
