Changing a video's frame rate with Enhance Frame Rate

Enhance Frame Rate converts any video to a new fps by generating in-between frames (frame interpolation), so a 24 fps generation drops straight into a 25 or 30 fps timeline or meets a broadcast delivery spec without a trip through another tool. This article covers where to find it, what it accepts and what it costs.

Where to find Enhance Frame Rate

Enhance Frame Rate is available wherever you work with video in Runway. Expand the surface you're working in to see how to start a conversion there.

In Tool mode

In Tool mode, you can convert a video you've just generated in your session, or upload any video and convert it directly.

From a generated output

  1. Click on any generated video's thumbnail in your session
  2. Beneath your video output, select Enhance Frame Rate
  3. Choose your target frame rate to start the conversion

The converted video appears as a new generation in your session.

From the model picker

To convert any video, including footage that wasn't made in Runway, select Enhance Frame Rate directly from the model picker:

  1. In Tool mode, select Enhance Frame Rate from the video model picker
  2. Select Upload to add a video from your device, or Select to choose one from your assets
  3. Choose your target Frame rate
  4. Select Generate to start the conversion
In a Workflow

Add frame rate conversion as a step in any Workflow. New to Workflows? Start with Introduction to Workflows.

  1. Right click on the canvas
  2. Search for the Enhance Frame Rate node and add it to the canvas
  3. Connect your video output to the node's input
  4. Open the node's Settings to choose your target frame rate
  5. Run the node
With Agent

In Agent, ask for the frame rate you need on a generation or an uploaded video, for example "Convert this to 25 fps" or "Make a 60 fps version of the last shot." See Creating with Runway Agent for how Agent works with your assets.

Which Frame Rate to Choose

The right target depends on where the video is going. Match the frame rate of the timeline, platform or delivery spec you're handing off to:

  • 23.98 or 24 fps — film and cinematic delivery, and 24 fps editorial timelines
  • 25 fps — UK and EU broadcast, and 25 fps editorial timelines
  • 29.97 or 30 fps — US broadcast, and most web and US editorial timelines
  • 50, 59.94 or 60 fps — high-frame-rate broadcast, sports and promo delivery
  • 48, 60 or 120 fps — high-frame-rate sources for time remapping in your editor

FAQ

Is this the same as upscaling?

Enhancing the frame rate and upscaling are different:

  • Upscaling adds pixels, so the picture holds up at a larger size.
  • Enhance Frame Rate adds frames, so motion plays smoother and matches the frame rate your delivery needs.

To learn about upscaling a video, see Can I generate videos in 4K?

Can I convert videos that weren't made in Runway?

Yes. Select Enhance Frame Rate in Tool mode and upload any SDR video up to 4K and five minutes, whether it came from a camera, another generative model or your existing library.

Does Enhance Frame Rate change the speed or length of my video?

No. It adds new frames between your existing ones, so the clip plays for the same duration, just smoother. To slow a clip down or speed it up, use the Retime node in Workflows, or convert to 60 or 120 fps and time remap the clip in your editor.

Does a higher target frame rate cost more?

No. Conversions are billed at 1 credit per 2 seconds of input video whether you target 25 or 120 fps, and at any resolution. A 10-second clip costs 5 credits.

Can I convert HDR video?

Not currently. Enhance Frame Rate accepts SDR inputs only. Convert the frame rate first, then convert the result to HDR with Runway Ruby.

How is this different from the Update FPS node in Workflows?

The Update FPS node applies basic interpolation when it raises a frame rate. Enhance Frame Rate uses a dedicated model to generate new in-between frames, which is the better choice for delivery-quality conversions.
