App Studio lets you build your own apps inside Runway by describing what you want them to do, so a task your team repeats every week becomes a tool everyone in your workspace runs the same way. This article covers where App Studio lives, how a build works from first prompt to publish, and how to remix an app that already exists in your workspace.
Where to Find App Studio
You can find App Studio in the left navigation bar.
The home page has a field for describing a new app, a row of suggested app ideas to start from, and your workspace's app library below it. Apps you're still building sit under Continue building; published apps sit under Apps. Use All and Mine to filter the library, the search icon to find an app by name, and the Latest menu to change the sort.
Where to Find Ready-Made Apps
Two tabs sit above the app library on the App Studio home page:
- Apps holds the apps built in your workspace.
- Store holds ready-made apps that Runway adds to your workspace, so your team has tools to run and learn from before anyone builds one.
If Store shows No apps here yet, Runway hasn't added ready-made apps to your workspace; they appear there on their own once it does.
Building an App by Describing It
There's no code to write. You describe the app, and App Studio's agent plans it, designs it and builds it while you watch a live preview.
- On the App Studio home page, type what the app should do in the Describe the app you want to build… field and select the arrow to send it. A single sentence is enough to start, for example "Convert ad scripts into shot-by-shot visual storyboards." If you need an idea, pick one of the suggestions under the field.
- The builder opens. The agent's progress runs down the left, a live Preview of the app sits on the right, and a checklist in the preview pane shows how far along the build is. The status at the top of the page next to the app's name updates as it goes, from Working… through Planning and Building.
- When the status reads Waiting for you, the agent has a question. Early in the build it asks you to Pick a color scheme from three palettes. Choose one, adjust any of the Primary, Secondary, Accent or Extra 1 colors to match your brand, and optionally drop in a logo, which goes into the design and the finished app. Select Continue.
- To add a thought mid-build, type it in the Send a note. The agent will pick it up while it works… field. Switch between Simple and Detailed in the top-right to see a summary of the agent's progress or every file it creates.
- When the checklist reaches Ready and every task is checked off, the agent summarizes what it built and the preview is ready to try. The field at the bottom changes to Ask for a change to [app name]…, so iterating is the same as building: describe the change and the agent makes it.
The agent names the app for you as it works. The pencil icon next to the name lets you rename it, and the Sessions menu in the header lists the build sessions behind it.
Publishing Your App
Until you publish, an app is a private preview that only you can open. Publishing makes it available to everyone in your workspace and gives it a link.
- In the builder, select Publish in the top-right corner
- Check who will be able to open the app. On Enterprise plans this is Everyone in [workspace name], and you can change it at any time
- Select Publish to everyone in [workspace name]
Publishing continues in the background, so you can close the panel and keep working with the agent. Once it's live, the app moves from Continue building to Apps on the App Studio home page for everyone in the workspace, with the Everyone in [workspace name] badge on its card. When you make changes later, select Publish again to roll them out to everyone. For more on who can open your app, see Sharing apps from App Studio.
Managing an App From Its Card
Each card on the App Studio home page has a ··· menu with the actions you'll use most:
- Add to favorites — keep the app close at hand
- Edit in Studio — reopen the app in the builder to keep working on it
- Remix — start a new app from a copy of this one
- Past sessions — see the build sessions behind the app
- Share — change who can open the app
Changing the Models Your App Uses
Every generation step in your app runs on a Runway model you can swap. In the builder, open Project settings from the top-right icons. Under Models, each step the app performs is listed with the model it uses; pick a different model from the menu and App Studio rebuilds the app with your selection. The same panel holds the app's Secrets, for any keys the app needs, which take effect the next time you publish. If your app works with uploaded files, they live in the Assets panel; if the app doesn't use file storage yet, ask the agent to add it.
FAQ
Why do I see Apps instead of App Studio in my sidebar?
App Studio isn't on for your workspace yet. The apps you're used to are still in the Apps tab, and nothing about how you use them has changed.
Where are the ready-made apps I used to open from the Apps tab?
In App Studio, ready-made apps live under the Store tab on the home page. If it reads No apps here yet, Runway hasn't added them to your workspace yet.
Is there a limit on how many apps my workspace can have?
Yes. The counter above your app library shows how many you've used, for example 4 of 25 apps used. Apps that are still being built count toward it.
Do I have to keep the tab open while my app builds?
No. App Studio keeps working for up to eight hours after you close the tab. Reopen the app from Recents or Continue building to pick up where you left off.
Is App Studio the same as Edit Studio?
No. Edit Studio is a tool for editing existing footage. App Studio is where you build apps of your own.
Can I see what my app is doing under the hood?
Yes. Switch the builder to Detailed to see each file the agent creates, and open the Code tab in the preview pane to read the app's code.
