In Runway Ads, you create ads by telling Agent what you want in a chat: remix an ad you already run, generate something new from a prompt or start from a template. This article covers the ways to start, how to keep ads on brand and what happens to the creative once it is made.
Where to start a new ad
Every ad starts from a new chat in Runway Ads.
- Open Runway Ads
- Select New Chat, or the + next to Recents, to open a new chat
- Pick one of the starting points below, or type what you want in the prompt box
Any Editor or Admin in the workspace can create ads. You do not need a connected ad account to generate creative, but Agent can only work from your existing ads and results if one is connected.
Ways to start
The new-chat screen offers a few starting points that shape your first request before you type.
- Prompt box — describe the ad you want in your own words, and attach a product image or reference if you have one
- Remix an ad — pick an ad from your connected accounts and have Agent make new versions of it
- Make 20 variations — generate a batch of variations from one ad, for testing
- Give me ideas — ask Agent for concepts based on your business info and what is performing
- Templates for you — start from a static or video ad template
Agent asks a question when it needs more detail, such as which platform the ad is for or which product to feature.
Starting from a template
Templates give you a proven layout for common ad formats, which Agent fills in with your product, copy and brand.
- On the new-chat screen, select a template under Templates for you, or open the template library to see all of them
- Use the All, Static and Video filters to narrow the list
- Select a template to open it, then tell Agent what the ad is for
Select the template directly rather than asking for one in the chat.
Using an existing ad as the reference
The fastest way to a strong new ad is to start from one that already works.
- In a new chat, use the reference tile in the prompt box to choose an ad from your connected accounts
- Tell Agent what to change, such as a new headline, a different product shot or a seasonal angle
You can also refer to an ad by name in the chat. Agent pulls in the creative and the ad's details so the variations match what ran originally.
Keeping ads on brand with a Brand Kit
A Brand Kit gives Agent your logos, colors, fonts and guidelines, so every ad starts from the right look.
- Build one from your website — ask Agent to create a brand kit from your site. It fetches your logos, colors and visual style
- Build one from a file — upload a brand guidelines PDF or a Figma file to the chat and ask Agent to make a kit from it
- Edit it in place — open Brand Kit in the sidebar to add or change logos, colors, fonts and reference images
If your workspace has more than one brand kit, use the dropdown on the Brand Kit page to switch between them. When a brand kit is in use, Agent checks the ads it generates against the kit's rules.
On Enterprise plans, building a brand kit from a website needs web access for Agent, which an Organization Admin turns on in Organization Settings, then Settings, then Agent Sandbox.
Getting the sizes each platform needs
Each platform expects specific sizes, and Agent handles that for you.
When you say which platform an ad is for, Agent generates the formats that platform uses, for example a feed size and a vertical size for stories. Before the creative is reviewed, Agent checks each variation against the platform's specifications. If a size is missing, ask Agent to create the remaining sizes.
What happens after you generate
Generated ads show up in three places.
- Beside the chat — the ads and variations the chat produced, shown in their placement frames, with a link to review them
- Review — every new ad concept lands on the Review page, where an Admin can request changes or approve it. See Reviewing and publishing ads
- Assets — the generated images and videos are saved to your Assets, where you can download them
Before Agent generates, it shows a card with the plan for the batch. Check the details, edit anything you want changed, then approve the card to start generating.
Finding your past chats
Your chats are listed under Recents in the Runway Ads sidebar. They stay inside Runway Ads and do not appear in the main sessions list in Runway Creative.
- A marker shows when a chat is still working, and a New reply dot appears when it finishes while you are on another page
- Hover over a chat for Rename and Delete
- Team members can open and read a chat they did not start. The chat shows who can continue it
FAQ
Can I make video ads, or only static images?
Both. Ask Agent for a video ad or start from a video template. Agent can also add a voiceover when you ask for one.
Can I use my own product photos?
Yes. Attach an image to your message, or choose one from your Assets, and tell Agent how to use it.
Do I have to connect an ad account to create ads?
No. You can generate creative from a prompt, a template or an uploaded image without a connected account. Connecting one lets Agent remix your existing ads and use your performance data.
Why did Agent make different sizes than I asked for?
Agent generates the sizes the platform you named requires. If you only want one size, say so in your request.
Does creating ads use my credits?
Yes. Generating ads spends your workspace's credits at the usual rates, and the usage shows up with the rest of your workspace's credit usage. Connecting ad accounts, syncing data, using the dashboard and approving creative do not use credits. See How do credits work?
Can I use Agent skills in Runway Ads?
Yes. Type / in the prompt box to see the skills available.
