Introduction
Apps are a suite of use-case specific workflows that allow you to execute particular tasks using the generative tools available in Runway. The following Apps are now available inside a Generative Session:
Video Generation Apps
- Animate Frames: Configure the starting and ending frames to create smooth transitions between them
- Backdrop: Use a preset or input a text prompt to alter a video's background while retaining the subject
- Color Grade: Change your video's color grade by selecting a preset or describing through a prompt
- Dialogue: Add a subject image and input the dialogue you would like them to say
- Lighting: Alter your video's lighting through a text prompt or preset
- Perform: Animate characters using Act-Two
- References: Add up to 3 Reference images and a text prompt
- Remove: Upload a video and describe the element you'd like to remove
- Time of Day: Select a preset or use a prompt to change the time of day in your video
- Upscale: Upload any video (up to 40 seconds long) and turn it into a 4K output
- Weather: Input a video, and select a preset or prompt to change the weather
Image Generation Apps
- Create Ad: Use an existing ad to generate new iterations
- Expand: Input an image and select the desired aspect ratio you would like to expand to
- Mockup: Use a preset or input a prompt to show a product or design on any screen or space
- Product Shot: Change the style, scale, setting, and creative concept of a product image with a text prompt or by applying a preset
- Stylize Image: Recreate images in any style through inputting a text prompt or selecting a style preset
- Vary: Create a new image or set of 4 new images based on a single input image
- Vary Ad: Change the product, headline, or color palette of an ad with a text prompt or preset
Audio Generation Apps
- Generate Audio: Transform written scripts into spoken audio with a voice of your choosing
- Stylize Audio: Transform your voice into another voice style
- SFX: Create sound effects from text descriptions

Apps Tips
We recommend the following best practices for Apps:
- Use high-quality image or video inputs to avoid morphing or artifacts in your outputs
- Start with simple, direct prompts instead of detailed or overly complex prompts
- Describe what you would like to see happen in your output (e.g. "place the object in a bright, sunlit forest") instead of using negative prompting (e.g. "place the object in a forest that isn't dark")
Accessing Apps
You can access Apps inside a Generative Session.
If you are in Chat Mode or Tool Mode, you can switch to Apps by selecting the Apps icon in the left hand sidebar:
From there, click into the App you would like to generate with.
Apps FAQ
When should I use Apps instead of Chat or Tool Mode?
Apps are best for executing on specific use cases across one or several generations. In contrast, Chat Mode and Tool Mode are best for more broad-based generative tasks that may require iteration and may not fit neatly within a use case covered by an App.
What inputs do Apps accept?
Accepted inputs vary by App. To see the valid input types for a specific App, refer to the instructions in the asset upload field for that App. You can learn more about supported file types across image and video inputs here.
How much does it cost to generate with Apps?
Credit costs vary by app. You can review the credit costs associated with an
app by hovering above the
located
in the bottom left of the App session.
When will more Apps be released?
While we don't have a specific timeline available to share, new Apps are on the roadmap for the following weeks.
Can I generate with Apps in Explore Mode?
Some Apps are available in Explore Mode. For Apps that are not available on Explore Mode, users will be prompted to switch to Credits Mode before a generation is created.
Are Apps available in the Runway iOS app?
No, Apps are currently unavailable in the iOS app. You may access them through your mobile browser.
Is there an API available for Apps?
No, Apps cannot be accessed via the API.
